We need people in our lives with whom we can be as open as possible. To have real conversations with people may seem like such a simple, obvious suggestion, but it involves courage and risk.

Interpersonal Process Group Therapy

Tuesdays 5:30-7pm

What is an interpersonal process group, and how can it help me?

Interpersonal process groups help people change unhealthy relationship patterns. At the beginning phase of the group, members share backgrounds and their reasons for joining the group. As members get to know one another, they discuss their struggles with the group and receive suggestions and coping strategies from each other and the therapist. These interactions not only gives members new tools, they also allow each member’s relational patterns to play out in the group.

Group members learn the advantages and disadvantages of their interpersonal style, how they affect others, what role they play in groups (caretaker, black sheep, mascot, champion, etc.), and what their social blind spots are. Having this understanding gives members the freedom to test healthier ways of relating in real-time with other groups members before trying them in riskier situations outside the group. All of this is done with the insight and guidance of the therapist.

What problems can an interpersonal process group treat?

Because relational patterns can be a major contributor to psychological symptoms, IPT groups are helpful for a wide range of problems. Here are some examples of what an IPT group can help with:

Anxiety and depression

People-pleasing
Ineffective relationship patterns
Regaining confidence after leaving an abusive relationship

Feeling like you don’t fit in
